Must a self debriefing be carried out after an unusual event?
Who initiates?
Does it replace Peer Support?
A Crew Self De-brief will be conducted immediately following any incident listed in ‘Mandatory Peer Support’ below or any other abnormal event deemed appropriate. The Captain will initiate the de-brief with the entire crew.
The purpose of the de-brief is to allow all crew members to express concerns and ask questions about the event. It permits the exchange of information and may help normalize the event. The emotional condition of the crew may only be revealed through direct interaction between all crewmembers. Participation of everyone must be encouraged.
Crew Self De-brief is not Peer Support nor does it replace Peer Support.
FoB 2005 #6
What is peer support?
Phone Consultation between Peer Support Facilitator(s) and all or part of the affected crew may be all that is required to complete Peer Support for minor events.
Group Support (face to face or, if unable, a phone conference) meeting between the Peer Support Facilitator(s) and, depending on the event, all or part of the crew upon return of the crew to base.

Is Peer support manditory?
Where would you find out?
Yes in the following cases:
refer to this FOB
Mandatory Peer Support:
1) After an abnormal operational incident during a flight leg which constitutes a traumatic experience for any one or all of the active crew members;

2) After any of the following Emergency Responses:

i) Category A = (Catastrophic Accident)

ii) Category B (Major Accident)

iii) Category C (Airborne Occurrence) e.g. dealing with an emotional, mental, and/or physical experience constituting trauma and incidents involving passenger or crew serious illness or suspected death;

iv) Category E (Hijacking),

v) Category F (Bomb/Sabotage Threat)

3) After Level 3 or 4 Unruly Passenger incident as stated in the Zero Tolerance Policy;

4) If warranted after a Level 2 Unruly Passenger Incident as stated in the Zero Tolerance Policy;

Additionally, Peer Support will be conducted:

1) When specifically requested by Flight Crew for their particular flight;

2) When initiated by Management, if the situation does not meet the mandatory Peer Support classifications as stated above.

following an event deemed ER cat c airborne is there a manditory standown period?
When will the flight proceed?
ER Irregular Operations (IROPS)
Following the diversion, or landing at destination, of an aircraft on an ER Category C (Airborne Occurrence) event, (e.g. dealing with an emotional, mental, and/or physical experience constituting trauma and incidents involving passenger or crew serious illness or suspected death), a period of “Mandatory Stand-down time” will be enforced. During this stand-down, an analysis of the incident will take place, communications will be established, any Peer Support considerations completed, etc. This will preclude a rush to continue the operation that may result in the overlooking of important considerations.

OCC will ensure that all of the involved parties indicate they are ready to proceed before the operation continues. Additionally, it will give everyone involved a chance to “catch their breath” without undue pressure to proceed.
OCC will clear the flight to continue

When police or authorities demand to talk to specific personal, must the Capt approve this?
what will he do?
Yes:
follow actions below

When police or regulatory officials wish to talk to any crew member on board an aircraft, the Captain and CSM must be informed and approve this. Keep in mind that in foreign countries these officials may have more powers than in Canada.

If the official wishes to remove one or more crew member from the aircraft the Captain and CSM must be informed and made aware of where they are being taken, for what purpose and how long they may be detained. If a single flight crew member is asked to be removed another crewmember shall be designated by the Captain or CSM to accompany the individual for support and as a witness.

The Captain must inform OCC and the Station agent of any of the above situations as soon as possible. OCC will then contact the Security Manager so that government assistance can be initiated and guidance on how to handle the situation can be provided.

FOM 2004/35
How should you respond to a distress message if you overhear one?
The distress (MAYDAY) call has absolute priority over all other transmissions. All stations hearing a distress
message shall immediately cease any transmission which is capable of interfering with the distress traffic and
shall continue to listen on the frequency used for the distress message.
As a general rule, aircraft stations intercepting a distress message should not reply to it unless there is no
immediate reply from an appropriate ground station or other station which is in a better position to render
assistance. If necessary, an aircraft should act as a relay between distressed aircraft and the appropriate
control station.
FOM 2004/35

Must you cancel a distress message? How?
If, after initiating distress or emergency communication procedures, the emergency conditions cease to exist
and no further assistance is required, the aircraft must cancel the state of Distress or Urgency. This should
normally be done by transmitting a cancellation message giving the necessary information to the station
controlling the distress traffic, who will then be responsible for advising all stations on the frequency in use that
the distress traffic has ended. Alternatively, if circumstances require it, the aircraft may cancel the distress by a
message to “ALL STATIONS”. It is important that the distress should be cancelled on all frequencies used
during the distress traffic.

Emergency fuel declaration must be made if forecast fuel at landing is ? and landing clearance has not been given?
What should you say?
An EMERGENCY should be declared if the pilot determines that the remaining useable fuel supply suggests
the need for ATC traffic priority to ensure a safe landing. It is Skyservice policy that an emergency must be
declared if the actual fuel on board reaches the value below and the flight has not yet received landing
clearance.
