Bacon's Rebellion
led by Nathaniel Bacon againt William Berkeley (gov. of VA) for failing to defend against the Indians. Indentured servants and poor farmers who rebelled against Berkeley. the rebellion ended with Berkeley's removal and the end of attacks on Native Americans.
Incas
Pre-existing civilization in South America (present say Peru) before the Age of Exploration. They were a civilization: had agriculture system (maize), type of religion (spiritual), had gov't (king).
Joint- stock company
An association engaged in a business for profit with ownership interests represented by shares of stock. The first of the 13 Colonies was formed under this type of company, Virginia Company.
type of colony: corporate
colony found by a compay of investors searching for profit. VA was the fisrt corporate colony in the new world, founded by London Company.
John Davenport
He was as Puritan clergyman. In 1637 he acquired the patent for a colony in Massachusetts. Cofounder of New Haven.
Conquistadores
Spanish conquerors during the Age of Exploration. Intorduced the New World and its benefits(goods: corn, gold) to Old World as well as diseases such as syphilis.
Astrolabe, Compass, Quadrant
Tools used by explorers on voyages. These tools eliminated most uncertainites of sea travel
Virginia Company
a joint-stock company that was chartered to settle in New World. They founded tobacco, under the leadership of John Rolfe. The company was allowed the same rights as Englishmen in Old World
Hernando Cortes
A spanish conquistador in the early 16th century. He led the expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire.
VA House of Burgesses
Representative gov't formed in 1619. it was created to enact legislation for the VA colony. This was the first form of gov't in the 13 Colonies.
King Phillip's War
was between Wampanoag Indians and colonts in southern New England. Colonists' hunder for land pushed them into Indian territories and the outrages Indians broke out in 1675. The Indian leader was given the nickname of King Phillip
Purtians
flocked to America hoping to "purify" the Anglican Church and develop a colony which would be a model to the world( "City Upon a Hill") They Founded Massachesetts Bay Colony
Protestant Reformation (early 16th century)
Goal: Purify the English Chruch of all Catholics. Led by Martin Luther and John Calvin. In England, it gave rise to Anglicanism.
MD Act of Toleration (1649)
Act that ordered religious toleration in Maryland. The Catholics supported this act in order to protect themselves fro the Puritans and Protestants.
Quakers
A group of friendly settlers in Pennsylvania. The Quakers tolerated every group and religion so PA, where they were settled, became a refugee for other social groups.
Aztecs
Pre-existing civilization in South America (present day Mexico) before Age of Exploration. Empire fell when HErnando Cortes and his members took over their gold and killed them all and aqquired their land.
Encomienda System
a system in which the spanish govt gave Indians to colonists for use of labor in return of the promise to christianize them. The Indians were treated very brutually almost like slaves. it gave the conquistadores control over the native populations and to accquire their land.
type of colony: Royal
colony that is founded by a person or group given the charter by the English Crown. Many of the first colonies that were founded as either a corporate or porprietary colony later became royal colonies.
type of colony: proprietary
colony in which one or more landowners get the rights that usually a state gets to rule. Maryland was the first porprietary colony in the New World.
Great Puritan Migration
Many Puritans migrated from England to North America during the 1620s to the 1640s due to belief that the Church of England was beyond reform. Ended in 1642 when King Charles I effectively shut off emigration to the colonies with the start of the English Civil War.
New England Confederation
This was a political and milittary alliance of MA, Plymouth, CN, and New Haven. The New England Confederation was highly successful in terms of bonding the colonies together, and provided a basis for the further collaboration of Colonies. The porpose of establishment was to unite the Purtian colonies against the Indians.
