Rise of Nazism: Hitler starts to make promises...1) I can end the depression! 2) Germany can get revenge! Hitler used propaganda to make Germans feel good about themselves again. Democracy fails and is replaced by a totalitarian government.
Double Talk and the Big Lie: Double Talk def. and ex--> Hitler say something then do the complete opposite (Hypocrite). Hitler believed that the size of a lie was important because, the bigger the lie the more likely people are to believe it.
Downgrade the Individual: Nazis stressed the importance of the communtiy. Community--> people who were loyal to Hitler and his Nazi party. Serving in the military, working in a weapon factory and or spying on ones neighbors were all ways to contribute to the community. Hitler ulimate goal was to create a community of individuals that were physically and mentally alike. This technique was also used by the Soviet Union(Russia) and Italy which was ruled by the fascist leader Mussolini.
Rise of Nazism: Hitlers promises: Land, strong military, hitlers favorite technique was scapegoating, all pure blooded germans, protection.Hitler joined the Nazi party in 1919 when there were less than 10 members. Nazis controlled Germany(15 years later) All of Germany was 66 million citizens. Hitlers public efforts was the cause of this. Hitlers speaking styles were hysterical,animated speeches, but still making the point clear. ( Hitler spoke to everyone-rich and poor) Enthusiastic waving arms and pounding a tables.
Authority: The Nazi Party represented 10% of the German population. Hitler knew best-why hear from the rest? If the others disagree they were wrong, who cares if the agreed(real purpose--> elimmenet dissent) Voting decription was that there was that it wasn't fair and the voters had to vote right in front of the Nazi officials. The Reichstag had no power because they could only pass laws but they had to be approved by Hitler first or the laws didn't matter.
Economic Trouble: German money became worthless due to overprinting debt loss of WW1. Before WW1, one American Dollar= 4 German Marks. After WW1, one American Dollar= 4 trillion German Marks. In 1929 unempolyment was 2 million.1931, 4.5 million unemployed.1933, 6 million unemployed. Unemployment increased due to loss of the war.
Personality Traits: Hitler spent most of his time reading books and listening to operas which delt with mythology. Hitler was a very odd,moody and easily angered man.
Weimar Unpopular: Germans blamed "Weimar Republic" for accepting the treaty of Versailles. W.R. Democratic Gov.t forced on Germany by winners of WW1. W.R. became unpopular because they found it was difficult to run a country.
Family Background: Father named Alois, age 52--> Alois was married twice. Mother named Klara age, 24--> Alois's second cousin. Adolf Hitler was a child of 3. Alois was a child of 7 but only 4 lived to adulthood. Adolf was in the middle class but after his father Alois's death it all started to go downhill.
Scape Goating: Two specific groups of people are becoming increasingly angry and want someone to blame for there problems. ( unemployed, veterans of WW1.) Target: THE JEWS.
Political Trouble: Before War--> Germany was a monarchy, but after the war Germany was FORCED to become a republic government. America, France and England forced Germany to cecome a republic after the war because they wanted to be less war. W.R. weak due to depression, no expierience, Germans that W.R. was helping German enemies. ( 6 million unemployed)
Significant Experiences: Hitler was changed by World War 1. He enjoyed bloody and tragic wars. Hitler even fought in WW1. He had eye problems during WW1 but it wasn't for long. Hitler was a vegetarian and didn't drink alcohol.
A New Strategy: 1st Nazi Party tried to gain power through France, but it didn't work so they changed their strategy to gain power through politics. This worked--> Germany became republic and Nazi's kept winning because they had majority votes due to large increasing number of members. 1925- 27,000,1929- 128,000, 1932 1,000,000 members in the Nazi Party.The Nazi Party was the largest single political party in Germany. The reason that the Nazi's didn't need majority of seats to win in elections was due to # of politicalparties in Germany. Germany had many more politcal parties than we as Americans are used too. The Reichstag was in cahos because the political parties spent time competing for power than trying to solve Germany's problems.
Beer Hall Putsch: Hitler and Nazis wanted to take over Bavarian GVT. Bavaria section in Germany like a state in the U.S. Hitler overestimated power of Nazis and held a large rally in a beer hall and it lead the members into the street. The intent thought was to throw over the Bavarian GVT. Outcome--> overestimating the Nazi's. HItler was put into prison for about a year for treason . Trial--> During Hitler's trial the Nazi's used news coverage as a way to spread ideas. Hitler wrote a book called Mein Kampf (My Struggle) while he was in prison. It contained all Hitlers ideas and later became a fixture in German Homes as Nazi's took over Germany.
Overproduction: surplus of goods leads to...FALLING PRICES. Falling Prices leads to... COMPANIES LOSING MONEY. Companies losing money leads to... WORKERS LOSING JOBS.
Accent on Emotion: The Nazi's didn't want people to think about their actions because they sumply wanted them carried out. Hitler use of propaganda include things like: massice rallies,huge banners,swastikas,bands,marching soldiers,and people screaming "HEIL HITLER", and films.The Nazi's equated justice with the German people.
End of Democracy: Elections were fixed. If a citizen voted against Nazi's they would be executed. They only had Nazi candidates. Every aspect of Germany life was being programmed by Nazi's. Totalitarian government--> labor, buisness, agriculture, the military,religion,court system were all controlled by Nazi's. Opposition was crushed --> concetration camps were set up for people who the Nazi's deemed were dangerous/unwanted. THEY DIED. Effect of the Nazi's Response the opposition to German republic it sent the public into fear and trumoil.
WW1: Germany loses war to: United States, England, France. Treaty of Versailles forced germany to pay, reperations 33 billion to its enemies and to give up land. Result: Germany are angry and humiliated.
US Stock Market Crash: After WW1 U.S. banks loan German companies money. INTEREST=PROFIT. After the stock market crashed, U.S. banks recalled most of the loans.
Hindenburg's Decision: Hindenburg was democratically elected president. The president is elected by the people but the chacelor is picked by the president. The president is more powergul than chancellor( pres. is #1 and chanc. #2). Chancellor is cheif minister of state in certain parliamentary govt as Germany; prime minister. Hindenburg undestimated Hitlerbecause he appointed Hitler chancellor so Hungy could control Hitler. Hindy wanted to return order to Reichstag. Howere Hitler and Nazi's seized control over the government. Hindy's realized underestimated Hitler but in this situation underestimation won which in this case was Hitler.
The Select: Aryan race--> Pure blooded Germans with blond hair, blue eyes, tall, athletic,superior to other groups. German believed that Hitler was infallible because he was the "chosen one" and theose dinvenly inspired don't make mistakes. ELITE! Aryan superiority and jew inferiority make no sense because Judiasm is a religion not a race, no sceintifc theory has been found that its superiror to each other, no such thing as an Aryan race.
Theories Behind Hatred of Jews: Hitler hated jews who were pure blooded german and had blue eyes and blond hair. Also the Jews had to be tall and athetic and fit.
Education: Adolf recieved good grades in elementary school. Hitler was a HORRIBLE student in high school, hitler dropped out of school when his father died. Adolf Hitler once hoped to study fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts.
