Cuban Missile Crisis
Time during the Cold War when America was afraid that Cuba was going to launch a bomb at any second.
Fidel Castro
A revolutionary leader of Cuba who two weeks before Kennedy took office Eisenhower cut off all diplomatic relations with Cuba because of their new leader.
N.A.S.A.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Was Kennedy's plan for getting the US back into the space race and get caught up on technology.
S.N.C.C.
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Gave young African Americans a larger role in the civil rights movement with coordinating sit-ins and other protests.
Black Panthers
A political party founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seal to fight police brutality in the ghetto.
24th Amendment
The right of citizens to vote in any primary or other election without having to pay a poll tax or any other tax.
George Wallace
Was forced to follow a court order to designate the University of Alabama; he was for segregation.
Bays of Pigs Invasion
An invasion to Cuba, but did not go as planned because the air attack and the distraction force did not make it to shore before the main forces arrived at the Bay of Pigs.
Stokley Carmichael
Leader of the black power movement; wanted people to earn their own goals and protect their communities.
Head Start
Program to give small children a head start in life by providing benefits to the child and mother (education and nursing).
Peace Corp
Volunteers that are trained to go and serve in under priviledge countries like Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Boycott of the bus system to get blacks the right to not have to give up their seat and stand or move to the back of the bus.
Test Ban Treaty
Treaty that prohibits nuclear weapon tests or any other nuclear explosion, in the atmosphere, outerspace, or nderwater.
Berlin Wall
A wall built around Western Berlin to keep people from the eastern communism Berlin from being refuges in their free land.
C.O.R.E.
Congress of Racial Equality. They staged the first sit-in in which black rotestors sat down at white lunch counters and refusessd to leave until they were served.
Great Society
Johnson's plan for the US after Kennedy was assassinated.
Black Power
A call for African Americans to define their own goals and to lead their own organizations.
New Frontier
Kennedy's plan of action for the US to get more involved with science and space travel.
