- imperialism
- domination by a powerful natin over the political, economic, and cultural affairs of another nation or region.
- cecil rhodes
- responsible for the expansion of great britain in southern africa
- roosevelt corollary
- in 1904 president theodore roosevelt extended the ideas of the monroe doctrine. roosevelt said that if any situation threatened the independence of any country in the western hemisphere, the us would act as an international police power to prevnt a foreign country from intervening. the us guaranteed that latin american nations would meet their international obligations.
- assimilation
- process in which the people of the colonies abandon their local cultures and adopt all aspects of the colonial power's culture.
- indirect rule
- a system of colonial government under which the governor and a council of advisers developed laws for the colony but local rulers were given the opportunity to exert some degree of authority.
- monroe doctrine
- 1823 statement that the us woulud oppose any attempt by european nations to interfere int he western hemisphere.
- concession
- grant of economic rights and privileges in a particular area usually given to foreign merchants or capitalists.
- suez canal
- in 1854 a french company gained a concession to build a canal through the isthmus of suez. in 1875 the british governmentbought hte egyptian stock and became the largest single stockholder and as a result they gained virtual control of the canal.
- arbitration
- settlement of a dispute by a party agreed upon by all sides.
- platt amendment
- provision of the cuban constitution giving the us the right to intervene in cuba.
- dependent colony
- colony in which the non-European majority is ruled by relatively few European colonial officials.
- panama canal
- opened in 1914, the new canal shortened the sea route from NY to SF by 8000 miles.
- boer war
- in 1899 dutch settlers (called Boers) and Great Britain began a three year war that ended with a british victory adn as a result they imposed a settlement that favored mining interests. the british allowedt he boers to continue to use their language (afrikaans) in their school and courts.
- direct rule
- system of colonial government in which the imperialist power controlled all levels of government and appointed its own officials to govern the colony.
- sphere of influence
- region in which one nation had special, sometimes exclusive, economic and political privileges that were recognized by other nations.
- protectorate
- system of governemnt in which the local ruler kept his or her title but officials of the foreign power actually controlled the region.
