Linking verb
a verb that expresses being and links or connects the subject to either a noun or an adjective.
indirect object
a word that indirectly receives or is affected by the action of a verb. it is one of the functions of a noun. It must come after an action verb and before the direct object. It asnwer that questions To whom? To What? For Whom? or For what?
preposition:
a word that joins or shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some otehr word in the sentence. it always begins a prepositional phrase.
object of the preposition
the noun or pronoun that appears at the end of a prepositional phrase.
interjection:
a word that expresses a strong or sudden emotion and has no grammatical relationship with other words in teh sentence.
conjunction:
a word that joins words or groups of words of equal rank.
predicate adjective
an adjective that comes after a linking verb and describes or limits the subject (hint- if the adjective after a linking verb is in front of a noun, it usually modifies that noun and is not a predcate adjective) (hint-repace the linking verb with an equals sign)
Appositive:
a noun or pronoun that comes directly after another noun or pronoun and renames that noun or pronoun. It adds information about a particular noun or pronoun. It is one of the functions of a noun.
Prepositional phrase
a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. It can function as a adjective or an adverb (hint- the adjective phrase almost always appears right after the noun it modifies, while the adverb pharse cna appear either beofre or after teh word it modifies) (hint-prepositional phrases at the begining of a sentence is almost always adverb phrases)
noun:
a word that names a person, animal place, thing, idea or feeling.
adjective:
a word that describes or limits a noun or pronoun by telling which one, what kind or how many. (note-sometimes nouns and pronouns function as adjectives in a sentence)
verb:
a word that expresses an action or a state of being
pronoun:
a word that takes the place of a noun
colon:
a punctuation mark used to indicate that something is following. it is a signal that says, "note whwat follows."
adverb:
a word that describes or limits a verb, adjective or other adverb and asnwers the questions. how? When? where? or to what extent? (note-sometimes nouns function as adverbs)
semicolon:
a punctuation mark used in place of a coordinating conjunction to join two independent clauses and to emphasize the close relationship between the two phrases.

a noun or pronoun that comes after a linking verb and renames or indentifies the subject. It is one of the functions of a noun. (hint-repace the linking verb with an equals sign)
direct object
a word that receives the action of its verb. it is always a noun or pronoun because it is one of the functions of a noun. It answers the question What? or Whom? after an action verb. Not all sentences have a direct object.
