Distributive Property
You can multiply a number by the sum of two other numbers or multiply the number by each and then add:
5(2 + 3) = 5(2) + 5(3)
Inverse Property of Addition
You can add the opposite of a number and get zero (to cancel):
4 + -4 = 0
Inverse Property of Multiplication
You can multiply by the reciprocal of a number and get one (to cancel):
3/4 x 4/3 = 1
Commutative Property
You can change the order in which you add or multiply two numbers and get the same answer:
3 + 5 = 5 + 3
7 x 8 = 8 x 7
Associative Property
You can group numbers differently when adding or multiplying and get the same answer:
6 + (7 + 9) = (6 + 7) + 9
3 x (4 x 5) = (3 x 4) x 5
Identity Property of Addition
You can add zero to a number and keep it the same:
6 + 0 = 6
Identity Property of Multiplication
You can multiply a number by one and keep it the same:
4 x 1 = 4
Area of a Triangle
A = 1/2 bh
Area of a Parallelogram
(including rectangles, squares, rhombi)
A = bh
Area of a Trapezoid
A = 1/2 h (b1 + b2)
Volume of a rectangular solid (box)
V = lwh
Surface Area of a rectangular solid (box)
SA = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh
Area of a Circle
A = pi x r x r
Circumference of a Circle
C = pi x d
Volume of a cylinder (can)
V = pi x r x r x h
Surface Area of a cylinder (can)
SA = 2pi x r x h + 2pi x r x r
