Division Algorithm
A method for dividing number combinations which have not been memorized.
Parentheses
Shows us the order for doing the operations when there are more than one operation in a problem. (do the operations in parentheses first)
Counting Numbers
The numbers we count by such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ...
Difference
The anwer to a subtraction
problem.

12 - 5 = 7

(the difference is 7.)
Operations of Arithmetic
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction. The denominator shows the number of equal parts in the whole.
Four Steps of Division
Step 1. Divide
Step 2. Multiply
Step 3. Subtract
Step 4. Bring down
Oblique
A line or segement that is neither horizontal or vertical.
An oblique line appears slanted.
Remainder
The amount left over.
Ordinal Numbers
Numbers used to name position
or order.

Addends
Numbers that are added together.

Product
The answer to a multiplication problem.
Geometry
The study of shapes.
Algorithm
A procedure for getting an answer.
Factors
Numbers that are multiplied together.
Odd Numbers
The numbers that are not even.

Minus Sign
A symbol for subtraction.

The minus sign tells us to
subtract the number to
the right of the sign
from the number to the
left of the sign.

Line segment
Part of a line.
Multiply
Adding the same number (the second number) the number of times shown by the first number.
Point and Line
The simplest shapes in geometry.
Number Line
Shows numbers at a certain
distance from 0.

Equation
A number sentence with an equal sign. (=)
Negative Numbers
Numbers to the left of 0.
Division
Searching for a missing number.
Sum
The answer to an addition problem.
Vertical Line
A line extending up and down.
Whole Numbers
The Counting Numbers and 0.

"Equal groups"
Stories that have a multiplication pattern.

In an "equal groups" story problem, one of the numbers is missing.
Sequence
A counting pattern.
