- Empire
- a political unit, often comprising a number of territories of nations ruled by a simple authority

- A rebellion of Chinese who wished to end foreign involvement in China.

- Building of the Panama Canal
- Very difficult progect that impacted pacific-atlantic shipping. Finished by USA under teddy roosevelt. 27,500 died during construction.

- A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries poitically, socially, and economically.
- Spanish American War
- in 1898 conflict between the united states and spain, in which the united states supported cubans' fight for indepedence
- open door policy
- A policy proposed by the US in 1899, under which ALL nations would have equal opportunities to trade in China.
- White Man's Burden
- idea that many European countries had a duty to spread their religion and culture to those less civilized
- Philippine Insurrection
- Even before the Philippines was annexed by the U.S. there existed tension between U.S. troops and Filippinos. The situation deteriorated and eventually we entered into a war with the Philippines. Emilio Aguinaldo helped Americans fight Spain only to turn on them once free. In 1901, Aguinaldo surrendered which greatly hurt the Filippino cause. The Philippines was not an independent nation until July 4, 1946.

- Theodore Roosevelt organized the First Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, later called the Rough Riders

- people thought that buying alaska was a bad idea but when all of its vallue was discovered they removed there remarks, bought alaska for 2 cents an acre

- Emilio Aguinaldo
- In 1896 he organized a Filipino independence movement to drive Spain ousts. His forces captured most of Luzon, the main island. In 1899 he ordered his troops to attack Manila
- Purchase of Alaska
- In December, 1866, the U.S. offered to take Alaska from Russia. Russia was eager to give it up, as the fur resources had been exhausted, and, expecting friction with Great Britain, they preferred to see defenseless Alaska in U.S. hands. Called "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's Icebox", the purchase was made in 1867 for $7,200,000 and gave the U.S. Alaska's resources of fish, timber, oil and gold.

- Mexican people were very poor they rebelled against their leader Fransisco Madera who was killed by general Victoriano Huerta, he was a very harsh leader, U.S drove his forces out
