A number sentence that contains at least one variable.
reciprocal
For a real number, where the denominator does not equal zero. The reciprocal is the multiplicative inverse and the product of both a number and its reciprocal is always 1.
rational number
A real number that can be written as a ratio, where the denominator does not equal zero.
additive inverse
The opposite of a number. Two numbers are "this" if their sum is 0.
equivalent fractions
Fractions that have different denominators but are actually the same amount.
mulitplicative inverse
The reciprocal of a number.
coordinate plane
A plane that is divided into four regions.
absolute value of a real number or |x|
The distance from zero to the real number on a number line.
median
The middle value in a set of numbers when the numbers are listed in order from smallest or largest or visa versa. If there are an even amount of numbers, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers in the set.
a ratio
The comparison of two numbers by division.
a proportion
An equation that states that two ratios are equal.
a percent
A ratio that compares a number to 100.

variable
A symbol, usually a letter, which represents a value that can change.

an equation
A mathmatical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent.
improper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.
variable
A symbol used to represent a changing numerical value.
coefficient
The number multiplied by a variable.
the percent change
An increase or decrease in the original amount given as a percent.
like terms
Terms with the same variables raised to the same exponents.
irrational number
A real number that cannot be written as a ratio of intergers.
order of operations
First, perform the operations in parentheses or other grouping brackets. Second, perform the powers and roots. Third, perform all multiplication and division from LEFT to RIGHT. Fourth, perform all addition and subtraction from LEFT to RIGHT.
mean or average
The sum of a set of numbers divided by the number of numbers in the set.
a unit rate
A ratio in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit.
math identity property
An equation that is TRUE for all values of the variable(s).
prime number
A whole number that has only two muliplication factors: itself and 1.
ordered pair
A pair of numbers on the Cartesian coordinate plane, a 2-D surface.
fraction
A ratio that shows a numerator and denominator, the denominator is the total number of possible parts.
real numbers
A rational or irrational number or every point on the number line.
intergers
Any member of the set of whole numbers and their opposites.
mixed number
A number that has both a whole number component and a fraction component.
