- LRE
- Least Restrictive Environment: The instructional setting most like that of nondisabled peers that also meets the educational needs of each student with disabilities.
- IEP
- A written plan, developed to meet the special learning needs of each student with disablilities.
- LEA
- Local Education Agency: A public board of education or other public authority legally constituted with a state for either administrative control or direction of, or to perform a service function for, public elementary or secondary schools in a city, township, school district or other political subdivision of the state.
- Zero Reject
- An element of IDEA that states that no child with disabilities can be excluded from receiving a free and appropriate education.
- IDEA - reauthorized
- Individuals with Disablilities Act Reauthorized: promotes involvement of students with disabilities in gen. ed. curriculum. Allows students with disabilities in assessments with modifications. Greater accountability for results.
- 504
- Vocational Rehabilitation Act Law 93-112: Defines handicapped person and appropriate education. Prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities in federally funded programs.
- REI
- Regular Education Initiative: A concept that promotes coordination of services between regular and special ed.
- CEC
- Council for Exceptional Children: largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted.
- MDT
- Multidisciplinary Team: group of individuals usually includes a representative of the local education agency, the classroom teacher, the special ed. teacher, parents or guardians, and when appropriate, the student, who together develop and implement the IEP.
- PAT or Care team
- Prereferral Assistant Teams: A group of teachers from the same school who meet regularly to discuss the specific progress of students brought to their attention by other teachers in the school.
- FAPE
- Free Appropriate Public Education: mandatory legislation provides that all children with disabilities be given a free and appropriate public education.
- ADA
- Americans with Disabilities Act: A 1990 federal law that forbids discrimination against persons who are disabled.
- IDEA
- Individuals with Disabilities Education ActL Legislation designed to ensure that all children with disabilities receive an appropriate education through special education and related services.
- EAHCA
- Education for all Handicapped Children Act: known as the Mainstreaming Law; requires states to provide free and appropriate public education for children with disabilities ages 5 to 18, requires IEPs, first defined LRE
- PLEP
- Present Levels of Academic Achievement: In IDEA reauthorized, is stated in IEP as to what the status of the developmental needs are.
- STOs
- Short Term Objectives: done on IEPs to see whether student is making progress and meeting needs
- FBA
- Functional Behavior Assessment: process to determine the underlying cause or functions of a child’s behavior that impede the learning of the child with a disability or the learning of the child’s peers.
- ISFP
- Individualized Family Service Plan: the written plan for providing early intervention and other services to eligible children and families
