Ecology
The study of the interactions of organisms with eachother and with the physical enviornment.
Population
All the organisms of the same species interacting with the enviornment at a particular locale.
Community
Consists of all the various populations at a particular locale.
Ecosystem
Encompasses a community of populations, as well as the nonliivng enviornment.
Bioshpere
Portion of the entire's Earth's surface (air, water and land) where living things exist.
Ecological Succession
Change in community composition that happens over time.
Primary Succession
Occurs in areas where the is no soil formation, such as following, a volcaninc eruption or glacial retreat.
Secondary Succession
Begins in areas where soil is present, as when a cultivated cornfield returns to a natural state.
Pioneer Species
plants that are inavders of disturbed areas and the then succession progresses through a series of stages.
Climax Pattern Model
Succession says that particular areas will always lead to the same type of community, called a climax community.
Facilitation Model
Each successive community prepares the way for the next...grass!
Inhibition Model
Colonists hold on to their space and inhibit growth of other plants until the colonists die or are damaged.
Tolerance Model
Predicts that different types of plants can colonize an area at the same time.
