- Core
- A plastic hub used to hold film without a reel.
- Reel
- (1) A metal or plastic spool used for holding film, either for projection or editing, (2) In 35mm, a reel is 1,000 feet of film
- Rewind
- A simple device used for winding film, typically found mounted on either side of an editing bench.
- Splice
- A method of joining two pieces of film so that they can be projected as one continuous piece.
- Synchronizer
- A device with a centered axle and several sprocketed wheels, called \"gangs,\" attached to it. Film is clamped into the gang so it can be measured by the footage counter.
- Flatbed
- An editing machine resembling a desk with a screen in the middle. The film sits flat on plates and are threaded through the center section that has transports for picture and sound.
- Fill
- Scrap film, most often used to keep a soundtrack running the same length as the picture, even though there is just silence.
- Slug
- Another name for filler
- (Trim) Bin
- A bin on wheels lined with a fabric bag and topped off with a frame with row pins on which to hang film while editing.
- Trims
- Outtakes of a few frames, usually a foot or less. Usually stored in a trim book.
- Fullcoat
- Mag stock with a layer of oxide the completely covers one side.
- Filter
- A tinted glass or small tinted plastic sheet placed in front of or behind the lens with a filter holder, used to change the color rendition of the entire shot.
- Foley
- The recording of custom sound effects during post production in the same way that dialogue is dubbed.
- Room Tone
- A recording of the \"silence\" of the room or any location, to be used to fill in gaps when editing sound.
- M&E
- Music and Effects. Used when dubbing films into different languages.
