purpose: antianginal

risks: orthostatic hypotension and headaches
purpose: loop diuretic

risks: may cause dry mouth, lethargy, thirst, weakness, hypotension, oliguria

risks: don't mix with cardiac glycosides (lanoxin, digoxin); may cause digoxin toxicity because of potassium-sparing effect; supplemnt combination with potassium supplements to prevent hypokalemia

antidote for toxicity: digibind
Lanoxin, Digoxin
purpose: antiarrhythmic, inotropics

pharm class: digitalis glycoside

treats: slows heart rate, treats CHF (uphill climb)

used to lower fever of many causes
ex: infection
What is the general action and information for antipyretics?
lower fever by affecting thermoregulation in the CNS and by inhibiting the action of prostaglandins peripherally;
affect platelet function, of these, aspirin is the most profound effect as compared with other salicylates, ibuprofen, ketoprofen
Define prostaglandins?
group of fatty acid derivatives found in many tissues
Define ibuprofen?
ex: Motrin
a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent with antipyretic and analgesic properties;
moa unknown;
treats chronic rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis;
useful for GI patients with aspirin intolerance
Precautions for antipyretics?
avoid if ulcer disease present; avoid chronic use of large doses of acetaminophen
Define diaphoresis?

administer with food or *antacids may minimize GI irritation (aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen)
*available in oral/rectal dosage forms and in combination with other drugs
Patient/Family Teaching for antipyretics?
*advise patient to consult hcp if fever not relieved by routine doses or if greater than 103F or lasts longer than 3 days
*CDC warns against giving aspirin to children or adolescents with varicella zoster or flu-like or viral illnesses because of possibility of Reye's syndrome
