- stimulate liver to break down glycogen to glucose (so-> blood glucose levels rise); stimulate breakdown of stored fats-> rise in fatty acids in blood->extra energy source; glucagon stimulates conversion of fatty acids->ketone bodies

- alpha cells release glucagon when blood glucose levels drop; occurs bw meals
