Attitude
A belief and feeling that predisposes one to respond in a particular way to objects, people, and events
Attribution Theory
people tend to attribute (or explain) psychological or external causes as the determining factor in behavior
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
people often have two conflicting or inconsistent cognitions which produce a state of tension or discomfort
Conformity
adjusting one’s behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard
Foot-In-The-Door-Phenomenon
the tendancy for people to comply with some large request after first agreeing to a small request
Fundamental Attribution Error
the tendency for an observer, when interpreting and explaining the behavior of another person, to underestimate the situation and to overestimate the personal disposition
Social Psychology
the scientific study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one another
Attitudes guide actions when:
  • Outside influences on what we say and do are minimal
  • The attitude is specifically relevant to the behavior
  • We are keenly aware of our attitudes
