- Arm
- Vertical portion of the microscope connecting the base and head
- Base
- Supports the microscope
- Coarse adjustment knob
- Used to focus on the specimen
- Condenser
- Small substage lens that concentrates the light on the specimen.
- Depth of field
- The depth of the specimen clearly in focus; greater at lower magnifications
- Fine adjustment knob
- Used for precise focusing once coarse focusing has been completed
- Head/body tube
- Supports the objective lens system which is mounted on the movable nosepiece.
- Iris diaphragm lever
- Arm attached to the base of the condenser that regulates the amount of light passing through the condenser.

Adjustable lens system that permits the use of:-Scanning lens (4x)-Low/medium-power lens (10x)-High-power lens (40x)-Oil immersion lens (100x)
- Ocular (nosepiece)

Ocular - one or two lenses at the superior end of the head or body tube. Observations are made through the oculars. Has a magnification of 10X.Nosepiece - rotating mechanism at the base of the head.
- Parfocal
- When the slide is in focus (or nearly so) at the higher magnifications once properly focused in the scanning/low-power objective lense(s)
- Stage
- The platform the slide rests on while being viewed. The stage has a hole in it to permit light to pass through both it andthe specimen.

Located in the base. The light passes directly upward through the microscope: light controls are located on the microscope base- Total magnification
- (TM) of any specimen being viewed:
-The power of the ocular lens multiplied by the power of the objective lens used.-Scanning lens TM: 40x-Low/medium-power lens TM: 100x-High-power lens TM: 400x-Oil immersio- Working distance
- Distance between the bottom of the objective lens and the specimen
