- auscultation
- listening to an organ (usually heart & lungs) w/ a stethoscope
- inspection
- looking at the parts of the body that are affected (mouth, nose, ears, etc)
- palpation
- feeling with the hands or fingers (for lumps, masses, etc)
- percussion
- tapping w/ a finger on the body wall to detect variations in sound over masses, fluid, or air pockets
- signs
- things that a doctor is aware of (that patient may/may not be aware of)
- serology
- tests reactions to antigens
- deficiency
- lack or defect
- degenerative
- pertaining to deterioration
- developmental
- occurs as result of some abnormality in development of tissue, organ, or some body part (usually occurs before birth or during growth stages)
- essential
- term assigned to diseases for which cause is unknown
- familial
- occuring in or affecting more family members than would be expected by chance
- functional
- due to a disturbance of function w/out evidence of a structural or chemical abnormality
- hereditary
- genetically transmitted from parent to offspring
- idiopathic
- of unknown cause, arising spontaneously
- infectious
- caused by infection
- molecular
- caused by abnormality in chemical structure or concentration of a single molecule
- neoplastic
- pertaining to any new or abnormal growth (ie cancer)
- nutritional
- caused due to nutritional factors
- organic
- due to demonstrable abnormality in a bodily structure
- traumatic
- resulting from some type of injury (physical, chemical, psychological)
- acquired
- patient was not born w/ it
- acute
- has a short and relatively severe course
- asymptomatic
- having no symptoms
- chronic
- persisting over a long period of time
- congenital
- present at birth
- disabling
- causes impairment of normal functions (seeing, breathing, etc)
- end-stage
- progressively deteriorating condition
- intermittent
- causes symptoms at intervals w/ periods of time between them (ie coughing)
- malignant
- tending to become progressively worse and eventually causing death
- neonatal
- affecting newborns (not necessarily illness)
- paroxysmal
- a sudden recurrence or intensification of symptoms
- progressive
- advancing, going forward (usually bad to worse)
- recurrent
- reappears after apparently had gone away
- relapsing
- return of disease after its apparent cessation (basically same thing as recurrent)
- remissive
- most or all of the symptoms have gone away
- sequela
- symptom resulting from prior disease, injury, or attack
- subacute
- refers to disease that is neither acute or chronic, but somewhere in between
- terminal
- expected to result in death regardless of treatment
- gross anatomy
- study of macroscopic (large) structures
- microscopic anatomy
- study of microscopic (small) structures
- chemical
- smallest components (ie atoms & molecules)
- cellular
- molecules combined together
- tissue
- groups of cells--made up 4 diff types: epithelial, muscle, connective, nervous
- epithelial tissue
- protective tissue found in lining of cavities and organs and as part of the integumentary system (skin); protects from injury & fluid loss
- muscle tissue
- responsible for all the movement of the body; subdivided into skeletal, muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
- connective tissue
- tissue that binds the body together & supports posture and & function; divided into: supporting, binding, fibrous (which includes adipose)
- nervous tissue
- composed of nerves & is communication system in body, passing electronic messages from the brain
- organ
- different kinds of tissues combined; composed of 2 or more types of tissue
- system
- made up of several organs that have a common function (some organs can be part of more than one different system)
- organism
- largest structural level
