- noun
- word used to name a person, place, thing, or idea

- word used in place of a noun

- word that shows the relation of a noun to another word in the sentence
- conjunction
- word that joins other words or groups of words
- interjection
- word that adds emotion to a sentence (wow!) (almost never used in medical reports)
- proper nouns
- nouns that are capitalized
- coordinating conjunction
- joins 2 parts of a sentence that are equally important
- FANBOY
- for, and, nor, but, or, yet
- correlative conjunction
- come in pairs (neither/nor, either/or, etc)
- a complete sentence has:
- a subject; a predicate; conveys a complete thought (can stand alone)
- simple predicate
- main verb and helping verbs
- fragment
- phrase or clause that is punctuated and capitalized like a sentence but does not have the required parts of a complete sentence
- run-on sentence
- two or more sentences (independent clauses) that are connected w/out any punctuation
- comma splice
- connecting 2 independent clauses w/ just a comma
- nonessential element
- something in a sentence that is not required--sentence can stand alone w/out it
- coordinate adjectives
- 2 or more adj of equal importance in a row
- parenthetical elements
- words used to add emphasis, order, or personal thought that could be put in parenthesis
- colon
- connects an independent clause to a list, explanation, rule, or quotation
- hyphen
- not a punctuation mark, but a spelling mark
- antecedent
- noun that a pronoun refers to
- modifier
- adjective, adverb, phrase, or clause that acts as an adjective or adverb
