- Diplodia tip blight is called a blight because the expanding shoots wilt and dies with the needles. What is the primary source of the conidia that infect shoots in a 30 year old landscape?
- Pycnidia on cone scales.
- If breaking open the shoot tip reveals a hollowed out shoot, was diplodia the culprit?
- Nope- Pine shoot Beetle
- Tell me about Scleroderris canker. Why is the US government so concerened about it?
- There are two strains of Scleroderris. One that attacks young trees less than 10ft tall (native). The European strain (reason for the quarentine) attacks mature trees of a wide range of conifers. The governerment has tried to eradicate this strain from Adironack National park.
- Where would you find the fruiting bodies of diplodia on Austrian pine?
- Peel back the papery sheet at the base of the needles.
- Is defoliation more of a consern on conifers or decidous trees?
- Deciduous trees can reflush during hte growth season. However conifers cannot. They keep the same needles for upto ten years.
- Several needle cast fungi can only spread their spores via rain splash. If you own a christmas tree farm and find that much of your crop is infected with needlecast, what likely is the source?
- In this case it would be infested, symptomless nursery stock.
- List some ways you can partially control your hristmas tree stock using cultural pratices?
- Avoid low sites; have good circulation; avoid infected nursery stock (use reliable); control weeds; sheer trees in dry weather; rotation; avoid planting near infected plantations
- How do we manage for regeneration of longleaf pine that have been infected with brown spot needlecast?
- Fire (prescribed burning to eliminate inoculum of deseased needles); Dip transplant in systemic fungicide.
