- What is vertical resistance and what is horizontal resistance?
- Virtical resistance is inherited by single genes imparting major resistance. Horizontal resistance is iherited from several genes and imparts only minimal resistance.
- Describe the HR (Hypersensitivity Response)
- When a plant recognizes it is under attack and kills its cells ahead of the pathogen. This is called Apoptosis and kills obligate pathogens that require a living host to survive. Hypersensitivity response is coded for major disease resistance and is selected for in many crops.
- Name an active and passive plant defense chemical.
- Active- salicylic acid Passive- tannins; saponins; polyphenols
- How can plants become systematically resistant to disease?
- inoculate a leaf with the pathogen at a local site. Or spray salicylic acid on the plant.
- Can plants activly defend themselves agains plant pathogenic fungi?
- Yes. They can build up lignin layers beneath the cells that the fungi are attacking.and they can produce many defense chemicals such as phytolaxins and peroxides that will deture fungal growth.
