What is vertical resistance and what is horizontal resistance?
Virtical resistance is inherited by single genes imparting major resistance. Horizontal resistance is iherited from several genes and imparts only minimal resistance.
Describe the HR (Hypersensitivity Response)
When a plant recognizes it is under attack and kills its cells ahead of the pathogen. This is called Apoptosis and kills obligate pathogens that require a living host to survive. Hypersensitivity response is coded for major disease resistance and is selected for in many crops.
Name an active and passive plant defense chemical.
Active- salicylic acid Passive- tannins; saponins; polyphenols
How can plants become systematically resistant to disease?
inoculate a leaf with the pathogen at a local site. Or spray salicylic acid on the plant.
Can plants activly defend themselves agains plant pathogenic fungi?
Yes. They can build up lignin layers beneath the cells that the fungi are attacking.and they can produce many defense chemicals such as phytolaxins and peroxides that will deture fungal growth.
