- Fiberous layer(sclera)
- outer layer forms a hard shell on the outside of the eye; referred to as the sclera proper (white portion of the eye).
- cornea
- transparent covering over the iris and the pupil
- Vascular Layer
- middle layer ; highly vascularized. three parts:
- The Choroid
- delivers blood to the retina & prevents light from being reflected internally
- the Ciliary Body
- contains the ciliary process (produces aqueous humor)and ciliary muscle ( responsible for altering the shape of the lens)
- Iris
- smooth voluntary muscle that contracts the pupil in bright light & dilates the pupil in dim light
- Nervous layer (retina)
- inner layer; composed of receptor cells that are called cones and rods.
- Fovea centralis (Macula lutea)
- small indention on the retina; contains a high concentration of cones; most sensitive area on retina.
- Optic nerve
- light rays on the eye that are then converted into electrical impulses and transmitted to the brain
- optic disk
- area on the retina where nerve fibers converge forming the optic nerve (blind spot)
