Basic story of Arda Viraf
AV goes to God’s realm of heaven and hell b/c that was were the righteous and unrighteous dead go (first distinction made b/w righteous & sinful dead)
AV’s trip to H/H confirms to practitioners that the world their religion assumed to be real was actual (travel narrative as proof-text for the cosmos). Strict ethical principles.

AV describes a class of people as neither good nor bad, but balanced in their earthly deeds.(“Place of the Motionless Ones”), kind of purgatory where they are purified and wait for the tan i pasen (future body)

Zoroastrian burial ritual
Earliest Z. texts show good burial as leaving the corpse to be eaten by birds of prey (can’t mix with elements)

Later Z changes this custom by ordering that fire ought to be kept pure from “impure” dead bodies—leads to exposure of bodies (“Tower of Silence”) usually for a week-month
