= Foundation of the word

ex. CARDI - heart
ex. RHIN - nose





Where are combining vowels used?
*between a word root and a suffix
ex. arhth-o-scope
*between two word roots
ex.gastr-o-enteritis
*when writing a word root by itself, it's combining form is typically used
ex. cardio




Prefix
= the beginning of the word
*give information about the location of an organ, the number of parts, or the time
*not every term will have a prefix
ex. bi- stands for two
