Thermogenesis
As muscular tissue contracts it produces heat.
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
A network of saccules and tubes surrounding myofibrils of a muscular fiber. Comparable to Endoplasmic reticulum. Functions to reabsorb calcium ions during relaxation of muscle and releases the ions to cause contraction.
Muscle Fascicle
Specialized muscle fibers in the heart that transmit electrical impulses from the Atrioventricular Node (AV Node) to the Purkinje Fibers are fascicles, also referred to as bundle branches.
Myofibril
A thread like structure extending longitudinally through a muscle fiber, consisting mainly of thick filiments of myosin and thin filiments of actin, troponin, and tropomycin.
Z-disc
Narrow plate shaped regions of dense protein material separate one sarcomere from the next.
Sarcomere
A contractile unit in a striated muscle fiber extending from one z-disc to the next z-disc.
Actin
A contractile protein that is part of thin filaments in muscle fibers
Myosin
Contractile protein that makes up the thick filaments of muscle fibers
myasthenia gravis
a disease of impaired transmission of motor nerve impulses, characterized by episodic muscle weakness and easy fatigability, esp. of the face, tongue, neck, and respiratory muscles: caused by autoimmune destruction of acetylcholine receptors.
fibromyalgia
A syndrome characterized by chronic pain in the muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints, fatigue, and tenderness at specific sites in the body.
muscular dystrophy
a hereditary disease characterized by gradual wasting of the muscles with replacement by scar tissue and fat, sometimes also affecting the heart.
tetanus
an infectious, often fatal disease caused by a specific bacterium that enters the body through wounds and characterized by respiratory paralysis and tonic spasms and rigidity of the voluntary muscles, esp. those of the neck and lower jaw.
motor unit
a motor neuron and the muscle fibers innervated by its axon.
