- Cognition
- any mental activity: processing, thinking, knowing, remembering, communicating
- Concept
- Mental grouping of things: bird, chair, etc.
- Prototype
- the leader of the concept: bird-eagle, ball-basketball, subject-math
- Algorithms
- In solving problems- a step by step procedure that's guaranteed to breed success. Takes a lot of time!
- Heuristic -
- simply doing what makes sense. (not putting two y's together) speedier than algorithm yet more prone to error.
- Insight
- lightbulb! when the solution to a problem says hello. - little boy, sand, bird.
- confirmation bias
- researching information in order to confirm preconceptions
- fixation
- the inability to see a problem from a new perspective
- functional fixedness
- thinking in the norm. searching all over the house for a screwdriver when the dime in your pocket would work just fine.
- representativeness heuristics
- basically, this is stereotyping. we hear something described and associate it to a certain stereotype. for instance: the prof vs. truck driver deal.
- availability heuristic
- assuming that facts are legit due to the amount of times they come to one's mind. -- the k thing.
- Overconfidence
- it's when big headed people assume they're right.
- framing
- condoms are 95% effective. condoms are 5% faulty. see?
- belief perseverance
- clinging to beliefs after they've been disproved.
