- What was the impact of cotton on the South after 1800? Be able to discuss its impact on yeoman farmers, southern politics, the environment, the southeastern Indians, and the southern economy.
- Drives out yeoman farmers and indians. Land prices sky rocket and room for cotton must be made. In southern politics they were able to get the federal govt. to do itʼs will up to the civil war. The environment was effected heavily b/c they would slash and burn the soil. The short staple cotton would dry the soil out quickly. The spread of cotton was so rapid that it retarded southern industrial development. They failed to diversify and industrialize. This allowed them to be blown away in the civil war and made it hard to recover from it.

- Learning how to read and right from Mrs. Auld, and fighting back against Mr. Covey. The first event was so important to Douglassʼ quest for freedom b/c it allowed him to take a critical viewpoint on slavery. He became able to question and condemn the institution of slavery. The second event was important b/c all he had left was his dignity and if he gave that up to Mr. Covey he would never be free.
