- Short Staple Cotton
- green seed, fibers were shorter than long staple, not quite as soft and not quite as good quality. had a lot more seeds. not profitable for jinning by hand. couldnt get a good price for it. Had a much larger growing area
- Eli Whitney
- invented the cotton jin in 1793. A yankee that graduated from Yale University. Came down to Georgia in the 1790s to be a tutor. He was hired by Nathaniel Greens widow. A reward was offered by Georgia for a good cotton jin. Decided to invent one. Significant because this made short staple cotton profitable. Giving cotton in the south the ability produce more cotton.
- Harriet Jacobs
- (most well known fugitive slave next to Fredrick Douglass) belonged to a physician who had a plantation. He lived in the town and she was a house servant to him. Once she reached the age of puberty her master would start to make sexual advances toward her. She refused it and the master did not want to rape her. He wanted her to submit herself to him. Her dignity is what kept her from submitting. She escaped because do the sexual advances from her master and her want for dignity and freedom. Escaped by spending seven years in her grandmothers attic and then fleeing to Boston. Doing this forced her to give up her relationship with her children.
- Nat Turner
- in Virginia in 1831 a literate slave who was a field hand. He was also a religious visionary who had visions of white and black spirits having wars in the skies. Tried to get followers but did not get many in the beginning. Him and his group of followers kill 55 whites in the middle of the night. Got them while they were laying in their beds at night. They went from plantation to plantation throughout the night and the next day. They would kill man, woman, and child. Along the way they would get more slaves to join them. However, some would refuse or even fight back. There was a huge backlash. The whites organized quickly and captured most of Natʼs followers but it took them 9 weeks to find him. This is significant b/c it caused a backlash about any talk about emancipation. They had to control people more by enforcing discipline and controlling religion. Things got better for whites and worse for blacks when blacks revolt most of the time.
- American Colonization Society
- as the population of free blacks increased. Whites became more aware and anxious of free blacks in their midst. It was thought that they would take jobs away from whites in the north. Also they were thought to be mentally inferior. In the South the whites did not want free blacks around slaves to keep them from rebelling. Because of this they would ship free blacks back to Africa. They founded Liberia.
- abolitionism
- was a movement to end the slave trade and emancipate slaves in western europe and the americas. Important b/c this was one of the factors of the civil war and helped keep the british out.
- William Lloyd Garrison
- editor for a radical abolitionist aper called the Liberator in 1831. He attacked slavery as a moral and religious evil. He demanded immediate abolition, not gradual emancipation. He was a part of a small totally uncompromising vocal minority. He was significant b/c he published fugitive slave narratives.
