why is it important to assess functional effects of musculoskeletal complaints?
give clue to degree of impairment (ADLs), workers comp, elderly & children-ability to cope
rotator cuff muscles
supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularus
cross over test
tests for DJD in acroclavicular joints, have pt cross arm over, if pain + for DJD
test for subscapularis injury (RC injury)
arm flexed 90 behind back pushing out agaist resistance
test for supraspinatis injury
drop arm test
test for teres minor or infraspinatis injury
arms flexed 90 degrees out in front, external rotation against resistance
shoulder ROM
abduction, adduction & internal rotation (arm behind back), abduction & external rotation (arm by head, hand touching shoulder), forward flexion & extension
Tinnel's sign-elbow
tapping ulnar nerve, bt medial epicondryl and olecranon, causes pain, ulnar nerve impingement
Tinnel's sign-wrist
tapping over median nerve. Carpel tunnel
Phelan's sign
holding wrists flexed for 1 min. Carpel tunnel
finkelstein's test
thumb across palm, flex & ulnar deviation, causes pain of Dequervain's tenosynovitis
Dequervain's tendonitis
pain in tendons of thumb elicited by finkelstein's test
sciatic nerve pain test
straight leg test
knock kneed
bow-legged (varus-air between)
Heberdene's nodes
McMurray's test
testing for injuries to meniscus, find lateral knee joints, flex and extend knee while feeling for clicks
uric acid buildup in joints causes inflammation, swelling, & pain
