- Chapter 6 Section 1 HIstory A Nation Declares Independence The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that the colonies were separating from Britain pages 170- 178
- This was the time when the Patriots and the Loyalists were having disputes over independence. "Common Sense" was a book that made many people turn to independence. This lead to the writing of the Declaration of Independence. It included Natural Rights, List of Grievances and Dissolving the Bonds
- Chapter 6 Section 4 History Winning Independence After a final victory, the Americans at last achieved independence from British rule. pages 191- 195
- Finally the war ended with a victory at Yorktown. Cornwallis made a horrible mistake by moving his main army to the Yorktown peninsula where he thought the British reinforcements would be getting in, but the French had chased off the ships. Cornwallis found himself trapped by French and American troops so he surrendered.
- Chapter 6 Section 3 History The War Widens The impact of the war was felt by all Americans in every part of the nation.
- During the war the Americans had alot of help. They had help from Native Americans, African Americans and most importantly the French. Also, women helped as cooks, nurses and some even disguised themselves as men so they could fight.he N. A. helped on the battle field but they also taught the Americans a different type of fighting strategy. The French helped the most, they sunk British reinforcment ships because the Americans didn't have any battle ships and they had very good generals that played big roles in their victory.
- Chapter 7 Section 1 History Governing a New Nation Weakness in the Articles of Confederation convinced leading Americans that the country needed a strong central government. pages 204- 209
- Eleven of the thirteen states wrote new constitutions to support their government. They minimized the power of the governors and gave most of the power to the state legislature. Virginia was the first state to include the Bill of Rights. To make things more organized they made a system for land sales and settlement. Townships/ public lands were divided into 36 sections, 1 square mile each.
- Chapter 7 Section 2 History The Constitutional Convention After months of intense debate, delegates to the Constitutional Convention agreed on a new plan of government. pages 212- 217
- There was a fierce debate over the new form of government. It was suggested that the Congress representatives would be based on population, so the bigger population you had the more seats your state would get. The compromise was to have a two-house congress. The lower house would be based on population and the upper house would have two seats per state.
- Chapter 7 Section 3 HIstory Debating the Constitution The states approved the Constitution, but many of the states insisted that it also include a bill of right.
- Federalists wanted the Constitution to take place, and they favored a strong federal government. They also argued that the national government needed to have more power and the right to enforce laws. Antifederalists felt that the Constitution had gone too far. They thought that the Constitution had weakened the states. They pointed out that the Constitution had no Bill of Rights and that the President could be elected over and over again and easily become like a King
