- Deviance
- Violation of social norms. Provide boundaries for what is acceptable and what is not.
- 3 primary data sources:
- 1. Official stats 2. survey research 3. Participant observation field research
- Pos/neg official stats
- Pos: inexpensive and quick to gather neg: fail to be inclusive. Ex. crime reports dont contain all crimes that actually happend. fairly shallow.
- pos/neg survey research
- Pos: Lets sociologist collect data on a topic of their choice. Neg: more expensive and time consuming. May not yeild and accurate representation of larger group.
- pos/neg participant-observation
- Pos: Yields deeper and more accurate informatoin about research subjects. Neg: cant reach many people and is time consuming.
- anomie
- a state of relative normlessness or a state in which norms have been eroded. A norm is an expectation of how people will behave, and it takes the form of a rule that is socially rather than formally enforced
- Differential Associational Theory
- Contacts: The more deviant contacts you have, the more likely you are to become deviant Techniques: by interacting with deviants, we tend to gain knowledge of how to carry out deviant acts. Meanings: When around deviants, you begin to adopt their belief system and rationale.
