Why were the colonists so satisfied with their place in the British empire at the end of the Seven Years War? Why did the war itself spell the end of the happy relationship between the parent country and its colonies?
They were proud to be British. They had more land, and they were only associated with one form of government. The war itself spelled the end of the happy relationship b/c the British treasury was drained and it forced a change in policy for Americans to share the burden of defending administering colonies. This meant that they had to pay duties on many items.
What was the Stamp Act, and why was it put in place? How did Americans view this new policy? Identify three specific ways they responded to it.
The Stamp Act taxed all printed matter and was put into place in 1765 to pay for the maintaining of the military presence protecting the colonies. They saw this as taxation without representation. At the grass roots level they formed the sons of liberty. which was a secret organization of american patriots. At the government level they formed the Stamp Act Congress which was a meeting that discussed and acted upon the recently passed Stamp Act. At the economic level there was boycotts ‘non-importation’.
Why were the Townshend duties put into place? Trace the events from the passage of Townshend’s Revenue Act to the Boston Massacre.
It was put into place to pay colonial officials. Same Adams saw it as an attempt to make rulers independent of assemblies. He wrote a letter of protest, circulated by Massachusetts to other colonial assemblies. The Massachusetts assembly was shut down when it refused to revoke letter.
Given the outcry against the Boston Tea Party in the colonies, why did this event further polarize the two sides and push the country toward war?
It further polarized the two sides b/c the British wanted to punish Boston.
Trace the events from the Boston Tea Party to Lexington and Concord.
The Boston Tea Party (1773) Began with a plan to bail out British East India Company by lowering tea duty. This was resented in Boston, led to a standoff and a destruction of tea. This could have been amicably resolved, but British authorities were determined to punish Boston. The Imperial response was the Coercive acts. They shut down the port until all the tea was paid for, they transferred the trials of soldiers and officials to England, they said troops had to be quartered in homes if necessary, and they made law enforcement officials appointive, abolished local governments. The Colonial response was toward unity . . . and war. The First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia to issue official protests, urge Mass. to arm for defense.
When did the Second Continental Congress declare independence? When was the Declaration signed? What happened on July 4?
The Second Continental declared independence on July 2, 1776. The declaration had it’s final wording approved and received it’s first signature on July 4, 1776.
Why did Jefferson include the long passage on slavery in his draft of the Declaration? Why did the Continental Congress excise this passage?
Jefferson included the long passage on slavery b/c he felt that it was ironic with the the liberties and rights to a human as stated in earlier in the declaration. The Continental congress excised this passage b/c Jefferson's logic was so tortuous that it could hardly withstand public scrutiny.
How did slaves contribute to the break with Britain?
By striking for liberty, slaves encouraged the British as an element of in their war against the americans. The Americans were pushed toward independence by this knowledge.
What was the impact of the American Revolution on slavery?
It started to make people realize that slavery and the words within the Declaration were contradicting each other.
