- belief in the benefits of profitable trading; commercialism. There is a finite amount of wealth in the world and nations must get all that they can. Trade restrictions necessary to maximize flow of goods into and out of mother country. Colonies exist to produce for mother country and consume it’s manufactured goods.

- Colonial goods must be transported in English ships with English captains and crew.   Enumerated goods – sugar, cotton, indigo, tobacco, later rice – could only be shipped to England or to another British colony. European goods must go through England before going to colonies. Duties on articles shipped to another British colony. Later restrictions prohibited manufacture of certain goods in colonies
