- the tendency for people to comply with some large request after first agreeing to a small request

- people often have two conflicting or inconsistent cognitions which produce a state of tension or discomfort

- people tend to attribute (or explain) psychological or external causes as the determining factor in behavior

- A belief and feeling that predisposes one to respond in a particular way to objects, people, and events
