Parasympathetic system
Restores homeostasis
(slows heart, reduces BP)
Sympathetic System
Fight or Flight
(raise heart rate & BP, redistributes blood)
Joint proprioceptors
Located in and around the joints. Provide awareness of position and movement. Two types Pacinie's (quick adapting, Movement only) and Ruffini's (slow adapting, movement and static position)Protective
Muscle Proprioceptors
Located in muscles. 2 types muscle spindles (amount & speed of stretch, stops injury), Golgi Tendon Organs (in tendons, measures pulling)protective
Inner Ear Proprioceptors
provides info on static position and movement of head (equilibrium)head position-located in vestibule (Static), movement-located in semicirular canals (dynamic)
Spinal Reflex
Involuntary response to stimuli, basis for unconscious mortor function and basic defense mechanisms
Stretch Reflex
maintains muscle tone, supports agonist, provides feedback about muscle length.
Inverse Stretch Reflex
provides agonist inhibition
Flexor (withdrawal) Reflex
protective withdrawal mechanism moves body from harmful stimuli.
Crossed Extension Reflex
balances body when other side of body does a withdrawal reflex.
Tonic Neck Reflex
Orients the body in the direction the head is turned.
Righting reflex
(labyrinthin)
helps keep us upright and balanced, levels head.
Cutaneous Reflex
causes relaxation in muscles after massage or heat is applied.
Upper Motor Neuron
any neuron that starts in motor cortex of brain and ends in brain or spinal cord
Lower Motor Neuron
neurons that go from spinal cord to muscle.
