nitrogen
A colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that makes up about four fifths of the air.
Nitrogen is used by plants for growth.
oxygen
A colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that makes up about one fifth of the air.
Oxygen is essential to life.
carbon dioxide
A colorless, odorless gas. Plants use carbon dioxide from the air in the process of making food.
water vapor
Water that is in the form of a gas.
atmosphere
The blanket of air that surrounds Earth, reaching about 700 km above the surface.
troposphere
The layer of the atmosphere closest to the surface of the Earth.
weather
The condition of the atmosphere at a certain place and time
greenhouse effect
The process in which heat from Earth is trapped by the atmosphere.
wind
Moving air caused by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface.
barometer
A device that measures air pressure.
air pressure
The push of the air in all directions against its surroundings.
high-pressure area
An area of higher air pressure than that of the surrounding air.
low-pressure area
An area of lower air pressure than that of the surrounding air.
wind vane
A device, often shaped like an arrow, used to show direction of the wind.
windsock
A device used to show wind direction, consisting of a cloth bag that is open at both ends and hung on a pole.
anemometer
A device used to measure wind speed.
water cycle
The movement of water into the air as water vapor and back to Earth's surface as rain, snow, or hail.
evaporate
To Change from a liquid to a gas.
condense
To change from a gas to a liquid.
cloud
Billions of tiny drops of water that condensed from the air.
precipitation
Any form of water that falls from the air.
rain gauge
A device that measures precipitation.
humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air.
relative humidity
The amount of water vapor present in the air at a given temperature compared to the maximum amount that the air could hold at that temperature.
