adaptation
A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment.
biodegradable
Material that microorganisms and fungi break down.
consumer
An animal that gets its energy by eating producers (plants) or other consumers (animals).
deforestation
The clearing of large numbers of trees.
food chain
The series of steps by which energy moves through an ecostystem, starting with producers.
microscope
A device that makes very small objects appear larger.
parasite
A creature that feeds off other creatures in order to survive.
producer
An organism that uses light energy from the sun to make food. Most producers are green plants.
decomposer
Organisms such as bacteria and mushrooms that help break down dead matter to get the energy they need.
thermometer
A tool used for measuring temperature.
