Something used to represent an object or idea
model
The outer most and thinnest layer of the Earth
crust
A thick layer of rock between the crust and the core of the Earth
mantle
The center of the earth that is made of solid nickel and iron.
inner core
A molten layer that surround the inner core of the Earth
outer core
The age of an object relative to that of other objects, shown by the order of layers of rocks.
relative age
A fossil used to determine the relative age of a rock.
index fossils
The actual age of an object
absolute age
A bend in the layer of rock caused by forces within the Earth.
fold
A upward fold of rock layers (frown mouth)
anticline
A downward fold of rock layers. (smile mouth)
syncline
Carrying away of weathered rocks
erosion
A break in rock along which rocks have moved
fault
A type of mountain that forms when forces within the earth (magma) push upward.
dome
Large pieces of crust that float on the mantle
plates
Occurs when there is movement along a fault
earthquake
Type of fault where forces pull apart in opposite directions
normal
Type of fault where forces are pushed together
reverse
Type of fault where the layers have horizontally slid apart from each other
strike-slip
