MATTER
anything that has mass and takes up space
MASS
a measure of the amount of matter in an object
VOLUME
a measure of how much space an object takes up
WEIGHT
the force of gravity between Earth and an object
DENSITY
a measure of how tightly packed the matter in an object is
BUOYANCY
an object’s ability to sink or float, determined by its density
CONDUCT
allows energy (heat, electricity, or sound) to pass through a material easily
INSULATE
does not allow energy (heat, electricity, or sound) to pass through a material easily
MAGNETISM
matter is magnetic when all its particles have their north poles lined up in the same direction
POLES OF THE SAME TYPE
Repel each other
POLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES
Attract each other
NEWTONS
What force is measured in
SOLID
usually a higher density, particles have little room to move
LIQUID
less dense than solids, but denser than gasses
GAS
usually a low density, particles are spread out and move freely
