Alliteration
the repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close to one another.
Allusion
a reference to something known from literature, history, mythology, religion, politics, sports, science, or pop culture
Blank verse
unrhymed iambic pentameter
Denotation
the literal, dictionary definition
Free verse
poetry that has no regular meter or rhyme scheme
Hyperbole
a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect
Onomatopoeia
the use of a word whose song imitates or suggests its meaning
Idiom
an expression that is peculiar to a certain language
Personification
a kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human
Pun
a play on words
Tone
the attitude a writer takes toward the reader, a subject, or a character
Connotation
all the meanings, associations, or emotions that a word suggests
Symbol
a person, place, thing or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself
Understatement
Restraint or lack of emphasis in expression, as for rhetorical effect
Anachronism
An event or detail in a literary work that is placed outside its proper historical time period
Metaphor
words used to compare two fundamentally different things
Imagery
language that appeals to the senses
Assonance
The repetition of similar vowel sounds
Couplet
two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme
Simile
a figure of speech that used the words like, as, than, or resembles to compare things that seem to have little or nothing in common
