What type of spatula is used to compound ingredients that react with metal such as iodine or the mercuric salts?
Hard Rubber or Plastic Spatulas
You have to weigh on what type of counter?
a level and firm counter
A scale must be balanced when?
each time it is moved or its location is changed
Pointer should move an equal number of lines to the left and right what?
of the center line
Does the pointer have to be stationary at the center line for the scale to be properly balanced
Weighing papers on the left pan should be properly ... to properly insure no spillage when removing from the pan
How must the paper be folded?
from the lower left corner to upper right, and fold the paper again from the lower right corner to the upper left
It should be balanced with weighing papers on what?
both pans
Neither the weights nor any substances should be placed on the pans while the beam is what?
free to oscillate
Desired weights should be placed on the... pan and the substance is on the... pan
right, left
When adding or removing substances from the balance, always make sure the lever is in the what position
When is the lever turned to release the beam and the oscillations are observed
after the addition or removal of a substance
A balance must be cleaned after use and stored in an what type of area?
in an area free of dampness, dust or corrosive vapors
When mixing ingredients in a mortar, always place the drug with the... amount into the mortar first.
After you add the first ingredient to the mortar what do you add?
add equal amounts of the remaining ingredients, mixing thoroughly between additions
What are the two types of Graduates?
Conical Graduates, Cylindrical Graduates
What tpye of graduate is this: As the diameter of the graduate increases its accuracy decreases but it is used because liquids may be stirred in them and they are easy to clean
Conical Graduates
Which graduate has the greater degree of accuracy?
Cylindrical Graduates
What type of liquid measuring device is not accurate enough for pharmaceutical measurements
Avoid measurements of volumes below what percentage of the graduated total capacity
Measurements should never be made in what portion of the graduate
the unmarked portion
For measurements below 20 ml it is often preferable to use what?
a calibrated oral syringe
Measurements should be made at eye level, reading the bottom of what?
the meniscus
Graduates are either marked ... or ...
TD or TC
Graduates are held at the bottom with what?
thumb and finger
Bottle is grasped with the right hand, label is against what?
the palm of the hand to prevent soiling the label
Where is the graduate raised when the liquid is poured?
at eye level
The liquid is poured until when?
the bottom of the meniscus reaches the required mark
• Many oral liquids, especially antibiotics, are pharmaceutically prepared and stored in what form because they are more stable.
their powder forms
The stability of the liquid is different than that of the powder, the new expiration date must be recalculated and indicated on where?
the prescription label or an accompanying auxiliary label
What are the 4 Techniques for Reconstitution of Nonsterile Oral Powders
1. Measure the amount of “distilled water” or proper diluent as indicated on the manufacturer’s label.
2. Shake powder to loosen packed areas.
3. Add the required amount of diluent in divided portions as indicated on the label. Shake vigorously between additions.
4. If stock bottle, indicate date and time of reconstitution. Always indicate the new calculated expiration date on the product when dispensed and be sure to affix a “SHAKE WELL” auxiliary label if the product is a suspension.
