= Foundation of the word
*Provides us with a general meaning of the word.
*Indicates the body system of the part of the body that is being discussed.
*May also be an action.
*May have more than one word root.
ex. CARDI - heart
ex. RHIN - nose

Where are combining vowels used?
*between a word root and a suffix
ex. arhth-o-scope
*between two word roots
*when writing a word root by itself, it's combining form is typically used
ex. cardio

= the beginning of the word
*give information about the location of an organ, the number of parts, or the time
*not every term will have a prefix
ex. bi- stands for two
