anesthesia care provider
one who administers anesthesia
a medical doctor who has completed a residency in the field of anesthesia and is credentialed by the American Board of Anesthesiology
conscious sedation
a minimally depressed level of consciousness with maintenance of the patient's protective airway reflexes
epidural block
injection of a local anesthetic into the epidural (extradural) space via either a thoracic or lumbar approach
function of circulating
the role of the nurse in the unsterile field in the operating room
function of scrubbing
the role of the nurse in the sterile field in the operating room
general anesthesia
a loss of sensation with loss of consciousness, skeletal muscle relaxation, analgesia, and elimination of the somatic, autonomic, and nervous system responses, including coughing, gagging, vomiting, and sympathetic nervous system responsiveness
holding area
a special waiting area inside or adjacent to the surgical suite
local anesthesia
the loss of sensation without loss of consciousness
malignant hyperthermia
a rare metabolic disease characterized by hyperthermia with rigidity of skeletal muscles that can result in death
nurse anesthetist
a registered nurse who has graduated from an accredited nurse anesthesia program and successfully completed a national certification examination to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)
operating room (OR)
a unique acute care setting removed from other hospital clinical units where surgery is performed
perioperative nurse
a registered nurse who implements patient care based on the nursing process during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative period
regional anesthesia
the loss of sensation to a region of the body when a specific nerve or group of nerves is blocked with the administration of a local anesthetic without loss of consciousness
spinal anesthesia
the injection of a local anesthetic into the cerebrospinal fluid found in the subarachnoid space, usually below the level of L-2
the physician who performs the surgical procedure
surgical suite
a controlled environment designed to minimize the spread of infectious organisms and allow a smooth flow of patients, personnel, and the instruments and equipment needed to provide safe patient care
