Theme
A central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work
Foreshadowing
The use of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur
Symbol
Anything that stands for or represents something else
Allusion
A reference to a well known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art
Suspense
A feeling of anxious uncertainty about the outcome of events in a literary work
Dialect
The form of a language spoken by people in a particular region or group
Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces
Point of View
The perspective or vantage point from which a story is told
Narrator
A speaker or character who tells a story
Narration
Writing that tells a story
Mood
The atmosphere created in the reader by a literary work or passage
Plot
The sequence of events in a literary work
Character
A person or animal who takes part in the action of a literary work
Setting
The time and place of the action
Flashback
A section of literary work that interrupts the sequence of events to relate an event from an earlier time
Dialogue
A conversation between characters
