Allegory
A story that uses animals, people, or things to represent ideas
Autobiography
A story of one's own life as told or written by oneself
Biography
The story of a person's life written by another
Epic
A narrative poem written in an elevated style and telling of the deeds of a hero
Essay
A short composition giving the writer's personal views of a subject
Fable
A made-up story meaning to teach a MORAL LESSON
Folk Tale
A story or legend made by ordinary people and handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation
Journal
A daily record of life's occurences, as in a diary
Myth
A traditional story explaining how something connected with nature of human life
Novel
A book of fiction that is longer and more complex than a short story
Play
A story written to be acted out before an audience and told through the dialogue and actions of its characters
Poetry
A form of literature that uses sounds, rhythhm, and images to express emotion or opinion or to tell a story
Romance
A novel of adventure often including a love story
Satire
A literary work that makes fun of foolish or immoral actions or customs of people
Short Story
A short fictional narrative often developed around a single incident. Most short stories can be read in one sitting.
