What is voice?
Tells whether a verb is active or passive.
What is meant by active voice?
Active voice means that the subject if the agent.
What is meant by the agent of a sentence?
The agent of a sentence is the person or thing that is performing the action represented by the verb.
What is meant by passive voice?
Passive voice means that the agent is not the subject.
What is meant by saying a verb is in past tense?
This means that the action represented by the verb will take place in future time.
What is meant by saying a verb is in present tense?
This means that the action represented by the verb took place in the present.
What is the grammarian's clue that he is looking at a perfect tense verb?
Perfect tense verbs use the helping verbs; has, had, and have.
When the helping verb "had" is used, what does this indicate?
That the verb is in the past perfect tense.
When the helping verb "has" is used, what does this indicate?
That the verb is in the present perfect tense.
When the helping verb "will have" is used, what does this indicate?
That the verb is in the future perfect tense.
What helping verbs indicate that the emphatic tense is being used?
do, does, did.
When the helping verb "did" is used, what does this indicate?
That the verb is in the past emphatic tense.
What is meant by a verb being transitive?
That it has a direct object.
Why are passive verbs always transitive when it is clear they never have direct objects?
Because they always have a noun that is receiving the action represented by the verb. This noun is the subject.
