aside
words spoken by a character in a play to the audience or to another character but that are not supposed to be overheard by the others onstage
alliteration
repetition of the same constant soulds in words that are close together in a poem or repitition of constant sounds that are very similar
assonance
repetition of similar vowel sounds that are followed by different constant sounds especially in words that are close together in a poem
blank verse
poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter
couplet
two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme
foreshadowing
the use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot
imagery
language that appeals to the senses
dramatic irony
when the audience or reader knows something important that a character in a play or story doesn't know
metaphor
a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things where one thing becomes another without using as, like, than or resembles
pun
a play on the multiple meanings of a wordor on two words that sound alike but have different meanings
