Spasmis vessels
**Narrowing-*MOST COMMON*
Predisposing factors
genetics, diet, obesity(>30lbs), diabetes, hyperlipidemia (>240=high risk), HTN, smoking, stress, sedentary lifestyle, oral contraceptives
Forms of CAD
Arteriosclerosis= hardening and loss of elasticity
Atherosclerosis= Deposit of fatty streaks leading to irregular thickening and plaque formation. Graded I-IV (25%, 50%, 75% and complete blockage)
Asymptomatic coronary atherosclerosis
Due to compensatory collateral circulation(collateral vessel formation)
Signs and Symptoms (S/S) of CAD
Chest pain (angina)
Sudden death
Treatment of CAD
Diet- decrease fat & salt (decrease weight)
Medications- vasodilators
Exercise- gradually increase
Smoking cessation
Surgical interventions
Ischemia caused by atherosclerotic heart disease
Dx: Cardiac catherization, treadmill stress test, relief by NTG
coronary vasodilator
Pt. teaching- *take 1 wait 5 min. if no relief take #2 wait 5 min. take #3-if still no relief go to ER
Variant Prinzmetals
For coronary artery spasms
Treatment of CAD/Angina
Beta-adrenergic blockers (Inderal)
Calcium channel blockers (Cardizem)
