a computer program designed to support a specific task or business process
application program (program)
the executive in charge of the information systems department in an organization
chief information officer (CIO)
an information system that uses computer technology to perform some or all of its intended tasks
computer-based information system (CBIS)
a collection of related files, tables, relations, and so on that stores data and the associations among them
an elementary description of things, events, activities, and transactions that are recorded, classified, and stored but are not organized to convey any specific meaning
data items
information systems that provide computer-based support for complez, non-routine decisions, primarily for middle managers and knowledge workers
decision support system (DSS)
a type of interorganizational information system that enables organizations to conduct transactions with other businesses and with customers
electronic commerce system
systems that tightly integrate the functional area information systems via a common database
enterprise resource planning systems (ERP)
information systems that support the top managers of the organization by providing rapid access to timely information and direct access to structured information in the form of reports
executive information systems (EIS)
information systems that attempt to duplicate the work of human experts by applying reasoning capabilities, knowledge, and expertise within a specific domain
expert systems (ES)
information systems designed to summarize data and prepare reports for the functional areas, such as accounting and marketing
functional area information systems (departmental information systems)
a set of devices that together accept data and information, process them, and display them
data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient
a process that collects, processes, stores, analyzes, and disseminates information for a specific purpose; most are computerized
information system (IS)
an organization's collection of information resources, the users of these resources, and the management that oversees these resources
information technology (IT)
a high-level map or plan of the information assets in an organization
information technology architecture
the physical facilities, IT components, IT services, and IT personell that support the entire organization
information technology infrastructure
information systems that connect two or more organizations
interorganizational information systems (IOS)
data and/or information that have been organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning, and expertise as they apply to a current problem or activity
professional employees who are experts in a particular subject area and create information and knowledge
knowledge workers
information systems that summarize data and prepare reports, primarily for middle managers, but sometimes for lower-level managers as well
management information systems (MIS)
a connecting system that permits different computers to share information
information systems that typically support the clerical staff, lower and middle managers, and knowledge managers
office automation systems (OAS)
those individuals who use the hardware and software, interface with it, or use its output
the set of instructions about how to combine components of information systems in order to process information and generate the desired output
a set of programs that enables the hardware to process data
the flow of materials, information, money, and services from raw material suppliers through factories and warehouses to the end customers
supply chain
an information system that supports the monitoring, collection, storage, processing, and dissemination of data from the orgranization's basic business transactions
transaction processing system
