Colles
A break in the distal part of the radius.
comminuted
A fracture where the bone is shattered into fragments.
compound, or open
The fracture protrudes through the skin.
compression
A fracture occurring in vertebrae, generally caused by falling on the tailbone.
epiphyseal
Occurirring where the matrix is calcifying and chondrocytes are dying.
greenstick
A fracture where one side of the bone is broken and the other side is bent.
Potts
A break in the ankle that affects both bones of the lower leg.
simple, or closed
The fracture does not protrude through the skin.
transverse
The fracture occurring when a shaft bone breaks across its long axis.
spiral
A fracture caused by twisting stresses that extends along the length of the bone.
amphiarthrosis
Allows only slight movement like in the vertebrae.
synarthrosis
Does not allow movement, such as in the cranial sutures.
diarthrosis
Permits free movement in many directions such as in the hip, knee, wrist, foot, and elbow.
